Time Management Skills and Resources

Whether you're going to school virtually or in person, the most important skill to have as a student is effective time management. Time management is the process of organizing and planning your daily activities in order to get everything done in a timely manner. It's an important skill to have and one that works out great in the long run, especially if you learn it early and take those skills with you as you continue to grow.

Why Is Time Management Important?

Time management is a valuable skill to learn because it helps you better manage your time so it's easier to achieve your goals. Even though everybody has the same 24 hours in a day, not everybody uses their time in the same ways. In essence, it's not about how much time you have; it's about how you use your time. There are plenty of benefits that come from learning good time management skills both in your professional life and your personal life. Effective time management:

  • Improves your confidence and efficiency
  • Gives you more energy to achieve more throughout your day

Do You Have Time in Your Day?

While not every task can be achieved in a day, by breaking down your day and planning it out, it becomes easier to tackle bigger tasks. Many of those larger tasks that you procrastinate on because they seem like too much work can be broken down into smaller, easier-to-manage tasks. While you may not be able to get everything done in one sitting, you can still get through large chunks without feeling overwhelmed. This means you'll have plenty of time to do the things you enjoy without sacrificing your education.

Time Management Tips

Time management requires making conscious choices and prioritizing some tasks over others. It may not be easy to get started, but there are plenty of tips you can look to in order to best understand little ways you can improve your time management skills.

  • Plan Ahead: Set aside time to plan out your daily assignments, activities, office hours, and other meet-ups you'd like to attend. Using a calendar or planner is a great way to visualize and better organize your schedule.
  • Don't Multitask: You may be tempted to do multiple things at once to get them done faster, but multitasking actually means you aren't as focused and makes it much harder to concentrate and get things done. Instead, create lists of projects and focus on the most crucial projects or the ones that require the most effort first.
  • Set Up a Study Space: Having a designated clean and comfortable study space makes it easier to focus on your tasks.
  • Block Out Distractions: While you're studying or working on tasks, avoid surfing the Web or browsing social media. If you can, consider using apps that block those websites for a specific period of time, or use a study method where you work uninterrupted for a shorter period of time and then take a short break.
  • Reward Yourself: After completing a task, it's important to reward yourself in order to avoid burnout. Being able to look forward to something, no matter how small, makes it easier to concentrate on your studies.
  • Create a Balance: Make sure you're not spending all of your time studying. Pencil in fun activities so you don't burn out too fast. Balance is best achieved by creating a predictable schedule that allows you to get into a routine so you can give attention to each aspect of your life at any given time.
  • Get a Good Night's Sleep: Forget all-nighters and make sure you get to sleep! Sleep is essential to keeping your body healthy, so you should aim to get seven to eight hours of rest every night.
