Working in the not for profit sector can be extremely rewarding, but also comes with a diverse set of challenges. Accountability, transparency, governance and stakeholder relations are all key factors in a not for profit organization’s decision making process.
Two nonprofits who are leading the way by choosing to invest in the Salesforce platform and FinancialForce applications are Camfed, based in the UK, and Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC), based in Canada.
How Camfed is handling rapid scaling
Camfed, an international nonprofit organization, supports marginalized girls in sub-Saharan Africa to go to school, succeed, and lead. Since 1993, Camfed has directly supported over 1.4 million students to go to school, and more than 3.5 million children in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Ghana, Tanzania and Malawi have benefitted from an improved learning environment.
With the holistic program insight provided by Salesforce and FinancialForce Accounting, Camfed hopes to galvanize communities and donors to reach even more children in much less time. In 2014 Camfed pledged to support 1 million girls through secondary school within the next 5 years. The rapid scaling of its program demanded a system which could support scale without massive administrative overheads. And the results have been significant.
Single view of all transactional data
The business now has a global ledger rather than separate ledgers for each location, and a single view of transactional data related to programmatic data, so one student, one record. This means that reconciliation on number of students and program status is now happening in real-time. The complex system to make bi-annual payments to students has been streamlined meaning manual reconciliation between systems is no longer required, saving significant time.
FinancialForce Accounting has provided a new way of reporting on donors which means Camfed can be more responsive to donor requests, eliminating needless communication. The real time nature of the application means that budget owners are able to see status at any time allowing them to maximize use of funding, key for any not for profit business.
An increase in donations
Overall, the business has seen an increase in donations as a result of using FinancialForce. Employees are focused on KPIs and are collaboratively working towards company and program success. Just as well, because the business has big plans.
“With Salesforce and FinancialForce we not only track our students, our alumnae in the CAMA networks, our programs and resources, we can also make those resources go further. By helping this generation of girls with a sense of absolute urgency, we are not only hoping for a better future led by young African women – we are counting on it” – Daniel Probert, Head of IT Innovation.
Christian Children’s Fund of Canada (CCFC) gets one central system for all their employee records
CCFC saw their main challenge as differentiating their offering from the competition by attracting and keeping top talent.
CCFC is an international non-government organization and member of ChildFund Alliance focused on creating a future of hope for children, families and communities across 6 developing countries by helping them develop the skills and resources to overcome poverty and pursue justice. Their goals are achieved by working through local partners who are experts in the unique needs of the communities where they work.
FinancialForce HCM enables CCFC to systematize human resources across 7 different countries by creating one centralized system for all employee records. Access to reliable, real-time human capital information helps CCFC be more efficient and stay competitive.
“FinancialForce HCM has helped our organization automate processes and enables employee self-driven services. As we have offices in 7 different countries, this provides greater efficiency, improves quality of data and reporting, as well as encouraging collaboration. For example, we used to have to email candidate applications back and forth with hiring members; with the applicant tracking system in HCM, we can access the same information, at the same time. As an HR team, it allows us to focus on more strategic people-management initiatives and spend less time looking for information,” – Catherine Yepson-Lee, Human Resources Manager, Christian Children’s Fund of Canada.
Now that all employee information is accessible from one place with Everyday HCM, the HR team is able to easily track progress with compliance related training across the organization and spreadsheets have been eradicated. Accurate time and attendance tracking brings better analysis on costs; and ultimately puts CCFC in a better place for stewardship.
Better recruiting processes lead to more hiring
5214 applications have been submitted for 42 roles since HCM was implemented in November 2014, and the process is much more streamlined and responsive to the company’s needs. Approval automations for time sheets, job requisitions and performance reviews from any location means processes are much smoother and more timely, and teams are able to share information via the HCM home screen.
Not only that, but HCM is giving CCFC insights into the business that weren’t available previously such as employee turnover and number of hire requests. Information required to apply for grants can now be pulled together in a timely manner and KPIs have been put in place to monitor overall business performance e.g. risk of retention of employees.
In conclusion, nonprofits are some of the most innovative businesses out there and in using FinancialForce applications are future-proofing their processes so that they can get on with what they do best, supporting worthwhile projects around the globe.
