Following the horrendous Sonoma County fires in early October, a group of us from FinancialForce drove to Santa Rosa in hopes of helping out the community. At the end of these emotionally draining days, and through the building of relationships, we came away with a better understanding of the challenge that lays before the community, the bravery that was displayed by local first responders, and the power of working together as colleagues, partners, and neighbors.
FinancialForce, along with our customer and partner Traction OnDemand, brought 20+ volunteers to work with Habitat for Humanity help victims of the fires. Thanks to an outpouring of donations, Habitat was able to provide new household items at little or no cost for many of the victims. Our efforts helped organize the backlog of merchandise and check in the community members taking part. We heard many heartbreaking stories from the community, and some of our own volunteers that grew up in Santa Rosa even reunited with old schoolmates that had lost their homes.
Equally important, we were able to learn more about the crisis facing Sonoma County moving forward. Prior to the fires, new housing for low- to moderate-income families was already a significant challenge. It is now critical for the community to prioritize rebuilding housing for these same families who have lost their homes. There is a significant risk that many of these people will be forced to leave Sonoma County permanently due to the lack of available affordable housing.
As we connected with the Habitat for Humanity staff, other volunteers, the victims, and local firefighters, we learned that it is critical that FinancialForce stay committed to helping serve and celebrate the local Habitat for Humanity team’s efforts to rebuild. This effort is not going to be completed over a single volunteer event. We feel blessed to have had this transformative event shape us into a committed group, one that will continue to help rebuild Santa Rosa’s hardest hit neighborhoods. We know this will take time, people, and money, and we at FinancialForce4Good will do as much as possible to rally our organization (and our partners and customers) over the coming years.
